Bringing the Kodokan to Townsville: Sensei Boyd’s Journey to Judo’s Home in Japan
Sensei Boyd McMahon was fortunate to be selected by Judo Australia as one of nine coaches from across the country to attend a week at the world-famous Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo - the traditional home of global judo.
During his time at the Kodokan in March 2026, Boyd participated in both classroom learning and on-mat training, working with instructors of up to 8th Dan rank and refining the finer details of judo technique. He also undertook a grading assessment conducted by Kodokan instructors as part of the experience.
Boyd McMahon presents the Townsville Judo Club Appreciation Plaque to Kodokan President, Haruki Uemura in Tokyo, March 2026
A special highlight of the trip was presenting an appreciation plaque to the current Kodokan President, 9th Dan Haruki Uemura, who was the 1976 World and Olympic Champion in the Open Weight division.
This incredible opportunity at the Kodokan provided valuable insights into the history, philosophy, and technical depth of judo at its source. Boyd has plenty to share with our members when we return next term, and we look forward to seeing these learnings flow onto the mats.
Experiences like this are incredibly valuable not just for our coaches, but for every member of Townsville Judo Club. Bringing world-class knowledge back to our regional community helps us continue to grow, improve and provide the highest quality judo experience for our members - from beginners through to those pursuing competitive pathways.
Thank you to Judo Australia for providing this wonderful opportunity.
